Four first-year students will be chosen to be the 2010 NCCU First-Year Bloggers for 2010-2011. We are looking for new students who are willing to share the story of their "first-year experience" through blogging and vlogging!

To be considered, complete the application linked below, and the NCCU Office of Orientation and FYE will be in touch soon regarding the interview process.

Applications will be reviewed as they are received, and 4 bloggers will be chosen on a rolling basis. Bloggers will be chosen based on their displayed potential to sustain creative and innovative blogs throughout the 2010-2011 academic year.

Eagle CORE Orientation Leaders Attend Leadership Conference

Over the weekend, 12 Eagle CORE Orientation Leaders attended the Southern Regional Orientation Workshop (SROW) in Louisville, Kentucky! They learned valuable skills about working with first-year students and families, and had a lot of fun as well!

LEAD/WHOLE CONFERENCE OPENING SESSION

North Carolina Central University hosted the LEAD/WHOLE Conference on Saturday, February 20, 2010!

LEAD is an annual student leadership conference sponsored by the North Carolina College Personnel Association. In 2010, LEAD combined with the WHOLE Conferece, which is an annual conference at NCCU centered on the WHOLE woman with a mission to create unity among all African-American females.

The theme for the conference was "Back to the Future." During the Opening Session, Dr. Kevin Rome issued a "remix challenge" to students in attendance. Colleges and universities took about 15 minutes to come up with a remix to TV show theme songs from the past!

"I have been swarmed with homework and writing assignments just yesterday I was given the assignment of reading W E B Dubois book "Souls Of Black folk" which is a 300page book and I have to write a 3-5 page summary by next Thursday. I only have a week and a half to do this assignment. WOW!! Only a short time, but hey when you are in college you get these assignments. It seems like a challenge but I am sure and determined to get this assignment done and turned in on time."

NCCU Eagle Institute Orientation - Summer 2010

The summer 2010 orientation dates are now available on our Orientation and FYE website.

These sessions are designed for incoming fall 2010 NCCU students. During the sessions, you'll meet with an academic advisor, register for fall courses, meet other NCCU students, and participate in activities and workshops to help you learn about life at NCCU!

Remember that orientation is $125 for incoming freshmen and $50 for transfer students. The orientation fee is due at the time of registration. The online registration process for orientation sessions will begin on January 31, 2010.

NCCU Freshman Class Council in the Holiday Spirit

NCCU Freshman Class Council collected funds and perishable items to support a family during the Thanksgiving Holiday! Great job to all involved in the collection and all NCCU students who contributed. The food and a gift card was delivered yesterday to a very appreciate family in Durham to help them have a happy Thanksgiving!

In addition to the supporting a local family, the NCCU Freshman Class Council also sponsored a food collection for the Durham Food Bank. The Council colleceted 622 pounds of food by sponsoring a competition among campus residence halls. Congratulations to Baynes Hall for collecting the most! Great job to all students who participated in these two projects to support families in Durham during the holidays!

NCCU First-Year Blogger of the Week: ASHLEY

Ashley is awesome. She drives an '86 Chevrolet Truck (Custom Deluxe - see her first blog post). She made the NCCU track team. And she's definitely "Not Your Ordinary Barnyard Fowl"

As a freshman at NCCU, Ashley is learning a lot about time-management. She wrote, "My personal definition of time management is being able to manage your schedule wisely... For example, if you have a three page paper due for your English class; but heard about this party (everyone's supposedly going to) taking place at the Union. What would be the logical decision to make?"

Ashley calls her blog Not Your Ordinary Barnyard Fowl, and she's proving to be just that during her freshman year at NCCU.

NCCU First-Year Blogger of the Week: Ryan

The NCCU First-Year Blogger of the week is Ryan, or as he call his blog, "An Eagle Icon."

Ryan's enjoying the crisp fall season as he's become a HUGE supporter of Eagle Football during the first season. Ryan blogged about his anticipation for Family Weekend, which was the first home game vs. Morehead State University, stating that "Saturday could not come fast enough..."

He also blogged about his excitement to attend his first Aggie-Eagle Classic this past weekend. Although NCCU came out a touchdown short, the game proved to be one of the biggest thrillers in the Classic's history. Ryan will surely have something to write about in his blogs this week.

NCCU Freshmen: The NC State Fair is Coming! Plan to Attend - You'll Be "Happy" You Did....

NCCU Freshmen, and other Eagles!

This is Brian from the NCCU Orientation and First-Year Experience office with a special post to the NCCU First-Year Blog. As a native of the Triangle area, I grew up going to the North Carolina State Fair every year. And I mean every year. I've been saving my pennies this summer eagerly awaiting the fall to arrive and the smell of corn dogs and deep-fried everything to fill the air once again. Now, here at NCCU, we have students from NC, New York, Maryland, Bermuda, and a ton of other locations throughout the states and the world. But, I'm here to say that no matter whether you're a new or old "North Carolinian," you must experience the timeless tradition of the North Carolina State Fair!

The NC State Fair '09 is coming on October 15-25, and boy am I "happy?" Sure, during your first year of college, you fear the infamous "freshman 15." But, next month, when October 15 comes around, take some time to attend the State Fair and chow down. I remember the first time I tried the deep-friend Snickers bar. Wow. It will definitely make your taste buds "A Whole Lotta Happy!" Just make sure to prepare to visit the fitness center in the NCCU Walker Complex a few extra times in October to make up for all the funnel cakes and fudge.

Growing up, I'm not sure why, but my favorite part about the NC State Fair were the pig races. I always wanted to watch them 3-4 times per day. Each pig had a number 1-4, and the audience sat in a section labeled with each of the numbers. To a young child, it was so exciting to see four pigs racing around a track while hundreds of people cheer them on! Whatever yummy treat they place at the end of that track, the pigs MUST LOVE IT. Betcha it's a deep-fried oreo (haven't tried those yet; but I think 2009 is the time).

Nowadays, my favorite part of the NC State Fair is playing the games on the Midway with my wife. She's super-competitive, which I love, and it's always fun for us to spend dollar after dollar competing with each other for stuffed animals that our dogs later tear to pieces. I'll never forget the day we got home from work, and Kermit was missing his legs. Tragic.

The part of the Fair that I've never attended is a Dorton Arena show. This year's shows sound like a lot of fun. In particular, I am a self-admitted American Idol fan. I also grew up in Chapel Hill, and went to the same high school as one of this year's performers, Anoop Desai (although I'm way older and don't know him personally). $5 to see him perform? Man, that's a deal! (My personal favorite contestant from American Idol, season 8, was Allison though. Sorry Anoop, you're still my "dawg," as Randy Jackson would say.)

The reason for this blog is that the NC State Fair makes me "happy." It's a NC tradition. And it exhibits everything that is great about the state of North Carolina. Where else can you go through a haunted mansion, eat a deep fried candy bar, learn about North Carolina agriculture, and also help the state's hunger-relief cause all in one day? Nowhere other than the NC State Fair.

I hope that all NCCU students will take some time to experience the State Fair this year. Always make sure to be safe and travel with a group of friends. And just be sure to make it an educational experience. Sure, you must try a taste of those deep-friend Snickers (pictured above; makes your stomach happy, huh?). But also embrace your time at the State Fair as a way to learn about all the great state of North Carolina has to offer. Trust me, even if the pig races and Midway games aren't your favorite things, there will be something at the 2009 NC State Fair to make you "A Whole Lotta Happy!"

If chosen as the 2009 Deep Friend Ambassador, the NCCU Office of Orientation and First-Year Experience will search the campus for an NCCU student who has never experienced the NC State fair before. How great would it be for one of our awesome new Eagles to blog about the Fair on our NCCU First-Year Blogging site?!?

NCCU vs. Duke Football this weekend! It's the Bull City Gridiron Classic....

Attention NCCU Students....It's going to be a great weekend to celebrate NCCU Athletics and experience the magic of Durham. Make sure to take advantage of the festivities!

"The "Bull City Gridiron Classic" features North Carolina Central University and Duke University in a historic first-ever football meeting between the Durham neighbors. The event also doubles as Duke's Homecoming game."

"In addition to the game and a Thursday pep rally at the Durham Athletic Park, numerous other events -- including a Habitat project involving Duke and NCCU students, basketball clinics led by former Duke All-American Jay Williams and pre-game festivities outside Wallace Wade Stadium -- will bring Durhamites together both on campus and in the community."

NCCU First-Year Blogger of the Week: Amarachi

As a freshman at North Carolina Central University, Amarachi has immersed herself into campus life within the first month of her undergraduate career.

Writing for the Campus Echo newspaper, she's already been published three times. In addition, she's participated in service projects like the NCCU "Make a Difference Day" while also taking the time to attend educational programs on campus outside of the classroom.

Her blog, FierceEagleDiva, covers it all....from academics, to extracurriculars, to her political inspirations, Amarachi has definitely settled well into the Eagle's nest.

In her latest blog post, Amarachi wrote: "I still need to be more active in inspiring teens to not only be involved in the national political arena, but also local/regional political affairs. The service we do now in our youth will only contribute to the prosperity of our lives and our nation when we are adults. . .we are truly the future."

She's destined to do big things at NCCU....

NCCU FAMILY WEEKEND 2009 - SEPTEMBER 18-20!

NCCU Family Weekend started off with a bang today! Over 100 parents and family members participated completed "Early Check-In" and received their packet for the weekend. Over 400 more family members are expected for tomorrow.

Today's activities included the famous "Fish Friday," Family Recreation Night in the Walker Complex, and parents also had a chance to hear lectures from NCCU faculty members about how to support their students' success [pictured below].

Saturday's activities feature a breakfast in WG Pearson Cafeteria, the first Parents and Family Association Meeting of the academic year, NCCU Football vs. Morehead State University, and the Legacy Talent Showcase.

Sunday, acclaimed author and actor Hill Harper will be speaking to students and families in B.N. Duke Auditorium at 12 Noon.

It's going to be an engaging and fun-filled weekend for our students and families!

NCCU First-Year Blogger Training featuring Ginny Skalski from NBC-17

You think blogging is easy? Wrong. There are many tricks to creating an engaging blog that people actually read.

Today, our NCCU First-Year Bloggers heard from the Community Content Manager (ie: professional blogger) from the local NBC-17 news station. Her name is Ginny Skalski (pictured to the right with our bloggers), and she knows her stuff.

Ginny shared best practices for creating, designing, and marketing one's blog. She also stressed the importance that blogging can have on the local community and the world. Thanks to Ginny for taking the time to visit with us today!

What is the goal of NCCU Make a Difference Day?
Make a Difference Day is an initiative established by NCCU Chancellor Nelms to bring the community together. This event is a service learning opportunity for NCCU and the surrounding community to work towards a greener environment.

What would volunteers do?
After checking in, volunteers will be divided into groups to begin beautifying the community. Participants will be picking up litter, painting, and planting. The only equipment required is weather-appropriate clothing.

What if I'm not an NCCU student?
Everyone is welcome to participate, as our primary goal is to increase community volunteer involvement.

When and where will Make a Difference Day be held?
Make a Difference Day will take place on Saturday, September 12. Volunteers will meet at 8 a.m. in B.N. Duke Auditorium and will head out to their respective service sites from 8:30 a.m. to 12 Noon.

NCCU FOOTBALL FANS INVITED TO “MEET THE EAGLES” TOMORROW!!!

DURHAM, N.C. (http://www.nccueaglepride.com/) - On Saturday, Aug. 29, North Carolina Central University football fans will have the opportunity to see the 2009 Eagles for the first time with the annual “Meet the Eagles” event, starting at 11 a.m. on the football practice field inside the NCCU track and field facility (off Lawson Street).

The team’s first public scrimmage will begin at 11 a.m., followed by a meet-and-greet session with the football student-athletes, coaches and cheerleaders. Admission is free.
Special guests include Brian Dawson of K97.5, as well as Mr. and Miss NCCU.

The regular format of the event was altered due to the location, which was changed because of the continuing installation of artificial turf in O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium.

“There is limited seating at the practice field, so we have shortened the event program this year,” said Kyle Serba, Associate Athletics Director at NCCU. “The comfort of our fans was our top priority in the planning process. We will not be introducing each student-athlete and coach individually as we have in years past, but fans will still have the opportunity to see the team in action and get autographs and pictures of the Eagles following the scrimmage.”

The 2009 “Meet the Eagles” is presented by the NCCU Department of Athletics and the NCCU Student Government Association Junior Class Council.

NCCU opens the 2009 football season on Sept. 5 at Hampton University.

NCCU Week of Welcome 2009

New NCCU Freshmen began the Week of Welcome 2009 (WOW) on Wednesday, August 12 by attending a program called "Training Day" sponsored by NCCUSGA. The night featured members of NCCU dance teams, performances by members of Greek Life, a performance by the NCCU Marching Sound Machine (pictured to the left), and much more!

Later in the week, students attended different Academic Engagement sessions depending on their major where they learned best practices and skills needed to be successful in their chosen academic program. Friday evening then featured a movie night in B.N. Duke Auditorium!

On Saturday, students had the chance to attend a Block Party on Brant Street and a night of fun at a dance in the Alfonso Elder Student Union.

Sunday wrapped up the WOW 2009 activities with the "A Salute to New Eagles" Pinning Ceremony where students received a set of new Eagle wings NCCU faculty, staff, alumni, and student leaders.

New freshmen and transfer students....You are officially Eagles. It's a new year and a time for you to learn independence!

Aspiring Eagles Academy 2009 - in pictures....

The 2009 Aspiring Eagles Academy is underway! This summer, 36 admitted students to NCCU are attending classes during the summer in preparation for fall 2009. The goal of the program is to help students grow, develop a sense of self, and create long-lasting bonds with their classmates.

Most importantly, the students will focus on developing academically with the ultimate goal of student success defined by continous persistence and graduation in four years. An important addition to this year's program are the 16 peer mentors who live in the residence hall for 5 weeks during the summer and lead engagement activities for the students.

Peer Mentors arrived on June 11 for 3 days of training....

Immediately after AE students checked into Rush Hall on June 14, they attended an Opening Session. Students then departed for dinner with the peer mentor staff.

One Day 2, peer mentors led the Aspiring Eagles in an activity called "Share Your Story." Each student paired with someone they did not know and shared descriptions of themselves. They then introduced each other to the entire group.

My name is LaTeisha Harris, and I am a current freshman at North Carolina Central University (NCCU). To pass my time I like to shop, travel, workout, and spend time with my family. When I chose to attend NCCU I thought mainly about the learning environment. I felt that since NCCU did not have large classroom and the teachers could concentrate on the students more than at a larger campus. Now that the academic year is over, I see that NCCU was a good choice for me. However, now that the semester is over, I do see some bits and pieces that I could have changed.

There are also a lot of things that I would tell incoming freshmen about college life. Some things that I would tell all incoming freshmen are to get involved with the different activities that are here on campus. Getting involved opens more opportunities and it increase your networking skills. When you attend and join different activities on or off campus, you meet people for different places, and you can learn more about their surroundings. One of the many events that I enjoyed this school year was Spring Fling Week. During Spring Fling Week there are a large number of activities that allow you to interact with this campus. NCCU has a lot of fun things to offer even by the time that activity is over, you will see much knowledge and fun you have.

Overall my experience at NCCU has been good. The main thing that I had to focus on was to find study habits that work for me and what activities fit into my life. My semester went by fast and the classes I had were not too difficult. Second semester was much harder than first semester, and at one point I though could not make it. But once I started to concentrate and managed my time better, every thing worked out fine.

College is the beginning of your new life. As long as you do not give up, anything is possible.

A Life-Changing Experience by Titania Fisher....

I remember attending the new student orientation and hearing the words “Community Service?!” The words that came out of my mouth were, “Lord, Jesus. Why? What was the purpose of this?” I couldn’t understand why I had to commit to volunteering my services….

I’m a strong believer in everything happens for a reason. After trying to find a place to volunteer for a while, I called a shelter in Raleigh that was listed with the Academic Community Service Learning office. I spoke with a gentleman by the name of Dwight who stated he still needed help in the kitchen. “How hard could working in the kitchen be?” I thought to myself. Little did I know this would be a life changing experience for me….

I started my community service the next day. When I arrived at the shelter, the kitchen staff introduced themselves and didn’t waste anytime with putting me to work. My title for the day would be line server. Dwight showed me how much food to put on each tray, and after that it was show time. When the doors to the kitchen opened, I could see a long line of men waiting for dinner to be served. I studied each face that walked through the door. To me these were not faces of strangers. But in these men I could see my father, grandfather, brother, uncle, the guy sitting next to me in class, my pastor, and I could go on and on. These weren’t just men that suffered from mental illness, alcohol abuse, or drug attics. These were men that you may come in contact with every day that at one point had every thing going for them and at the snap of a finger lost it all.

I had the pleasure to talk with a gentleman who told me his story of how once he lost his job. It was like a domino effect and every thing went down hill form there. After sharing his story, he wanted to know what brought me to the shelter. I told him I was a student at NCCU, and I had to complete community service hours. He then offered me words of encouragement....He told me to make finishing school my first priority. He also encouraged me to stay focused, and if I should fall off track, to make sure I get back on.

At that moment I finally got it….The light came on. I realized how blessed I really am. As we go through our day-to-day lives, we forget others who are less fortunate. This day provided me the opportunity to reflect on the values that my parents and NCCU have instilled in me.

Okay, so spring break is over. Some may have gone to Cancun, while others may have spent time with their family and friends. I, on the other hand, focused on getting my community service hours in. I didn’t have time to party or hang out with my family or friend. Don’t get me wrong, I would have loved to spend time with my loved ones, but I had bigger fish to fry!

The other day, when I was looking at the school calendar, I realized that in less than two months this semester will be over. Now it’s crunch time! As I sit in my office going over each syllabus for classes that I’m taking, I make sure that I’m not behind on any assignments. I learned early on in the game. The only way I was going to get through this semester was by making sure that I was ahead on all of my homework assignments. In another week or two I will be finished with all of my assignments. Then I can start studying for final exams. I started off on a rocky road, and now I think I finally got this school thing down to a science.

To all my fellow freshmen, I would like to say stay encouraged, stay focused, and know that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

My name is Jamal Cuthbertson. My hometown is Charlotte, North Carolina. I am a Freshman Political Science and English major. Myhobbies are playing tennis, running to free my mind from stress, and reading non-fiction books.

My favorite candy is "edamame"(chocolate-covered soybeans!!). I am currently involved in thePolitical Science Club, the SGA Freshmen Class Council, and I will also be a new Eagle Core Orientation Leader this summer!

I chose to come to NCCU for its variety of oppurtunities offered to EVERYONE as well as the committment to provide service to the local community while producing well-trained professionals for the global marketplace. The NCCU motto "Truth and Service" means going beyond the peripheral limitations as it relates to reaching out to the local, state, national and global regions for a more advanced society.

I would like to leave the footprint of being the student who didn't hesitate when people needed that particular person to help with a community service activity or just being the one who others can simply depend on when it comes down to not only business matters but social matters as well.

My name is Kimisha Falls. I was born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina. I like shopping, hanging out with friends, spending time my family. I'm a sophomore soon to be junior in the fall. I sit and wonder where time went, because it passed by so fast! My best advice for freshman students who are thinking about coming to NCCU in the fall, is you should attend NCCU if it's for you!

NCCU is a great school and have lots of helpful and wonderful people. NCCU also has one of the top business and law programs in the nation. NCCU has so much to offer, and I'm so glad I choose to come here. People have always told me that your college years goes by really fast, and they were not lying. It seem just like yesterday I was a incoming freshman with no clue where to begin my career path. My first semester at NCCU when I was a freshman was hard because I felt lost and I was so far way from home (well at least it felt that way - Charlotte is only 2.5 hours away).

I went through the whole semester undecided because I didn't know what I wanted to do anymore, and before I knew it, it was spring semester 2008. So I finally decied to become an Accounting major because I would like to have my own business and foundation.

I have so many things to prepare for in so little time because time goes by so fast. Coming to NCCU has been great. I'm so glad I choose NCCU to purse my education further. Since I've been here, I have learned a lot. I have learned to become more responsible, independent, to manage my time better, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, TO ALWAYS STAY FOCUSED!

Getting Into The Grove of Things:

Okay, so it’s been over a month now that I’ve been attending NCCU. Wow! Where did the time go?

It seems like it was just yesterday when I was driving around in circles looking for a parking space and praying I wouldn’t be late for my first class. Now as I sit in my office studying for midterms, I realize that we’re half way through this semester.

My first semester at NCCU has been a rocky one. Just when I thought I had my home life, school, and work down to a science, I received a email from my advisor stating I would have to meet with her once a week, go to two Lyceum programs, and write two reports. OMG! And I still have to do my community service hours!

Where am I going to find the time to do all of this and still keep up with my homework assignments? This means, I would have to live, sleep and eat NCCU. I must also give up Spring Break to complete the rest of my community service hours and write Lyceum papers. I can easily get discouraged from all of this, but instead, I draw the good out of it and use it as a stepping stone to get to the next level of achieving my goal.

Freshmen and Sophomores LEAD!

On Saturday, February 21, nine freshmen and sophomore students from NCCU attended the LEAD 2009 Conference at Meredith College. The conference theme was "Sustain Yourself, Sustain Your Environment." The conference displayed various innovative methods to be sustainable, to go "green," and to be considerate of sustainability during hard economic times.

The LEAD Conference is hosted by a college or university each year in North Carolina. It brings together students from around the state for a day of leadership development workshops!

The nine NCCU students presented a workshop about diversity, discrimination, and stereotypes and how it applies to leadership roles. It was a wonderful experience, and the students represented NCCU with tremendous professionalism and school spirit!

Most excitingly, the LEAD 2009 Conference ended with the announcement that LEAD 2010 will be hosted at North Carolina Central University.

All incoming freshmen will have the chance to attend the LEAD conference in February 2010 at NCCU to learn valuable leadership skills!

A Little About Me:

My name is Titania Fisher. I was born and raised in Stamford, Connecticut. I like reading, shopping, traveling, and spending time with my family. I’m a first semester transfer student at NCCU. I have and Associate Degree in Criminal Justice, and while attend NCCU, my major will be Criminal Justice with a minor of Psychology.

During my first semester at NCCU I've felt overwhelmed by trying to juggle working full-time and going to school. I learned very soon that I would have to put my social life on the back burner. I realized that going back to college wasn’t as easy as I thought it was going to be. If I wanted to pass all my classes I would have to hit the books hard. I would have to stay focused and develop a routine, which would allow me to stay positive and not give up.

My life in general - Going back to school has made me feel better about myself, and I’ve met a lot of new people from all walks of life. My life is not too affected by my school work because I’m new to the area, and I don’t know that many people. So, I just focus on work and school.

One thing I wish I knew before starting college:
That I would have to fit community service into my already-busy schedule. (Community service hours are a requirement for NCCU student to complete each semester)

A few suggestions to prospective students:
Stay focused, manage you time, and ask questions!!!!

Lots of Work: Being a freshman I am often pressured with lots of work and as well as a lot of other things going on. Currently I am an Accounting major, a Conference Assistant for New Residence Hall I and II, and part of the election board and hall committee in New Res I.

My Major: I may only have one class in my major for now (Finite Math 1210), but I will have much more than that for my next year in college as a sophomore.

I will have taken almost all of my general education courses during my first and during the current, my second semester, of freshman year. If you choose a complex major, it is important to listen to and work with your advisor. Knowing that college isn't easy, any person new to a system must adjust his or herself to the way of doing things in college. For me I know things will become extremely hard soon enough considering that I am considering adding a second major.

Why do we have such a rigorous basketball travel schedule?

"I am so happy someone has finally asked this question. Due to our independent status right now, it is very difficult to schedule with teams who are conference members. If you notice that most schools start conference competition the beginning of January, thus the number of available dates these schools will have for non-conference games decreases significantly. Thus, we are left with very few open dates to schedule later in the season. Hence, all of our travel and the bulk of our schedule occurs during the months of November - January. Once we have been accepted for membership into a conference, our travel schedule will decrease."

NCCU Freshman, Karrehl Moore, tells more....

My Activities on Campus: Knowing that I am a freshman in college and life as an athlete goes, I have held back on playing baseball for a year at least until things started to settle down.

Now, I did try out for the baseball team early in the fall, but it was not working out too well considering the committment it takes to remain on the team. I had all morning classes, homework, and baseball practice every day in the afternoon right after my last class. Because of this constant running around I got no sleep whatsoever. I may be a late-night person and like to be up at night, but when I need sleep I must NEED it because my body just shuts down.

Baseball at the time was just not working for me even though I know I love baseball and wanted to play it badly. Soon enough I made the personal decision to put it aside and get my academics straight first. The whole point of my story is to learn what you can and can't do alone and with other things as well. It is beneficial for you to decide what you really desire to do.

For the college life there is plenty of activity for everyone to get involved in. You must take it upon yourself to find out your interests and get involved. Other than that, just relaxing and hanging with friends in the residence hall is fun enough... but don't hang too much and fall behind. Just set boundaries for yourself and your peers.

What I Wish I Knew Before Attending NCCU: I wish I would have known more about the school as a whole and what to really expect

Hello, New Eagles!!! My name Kimisha Falls, and I'm sophomore a Accounting Major. One of the wonderful ways I got involved around campus was joining the LEAD Conference Delegation this year. This conference bring students together from all around the state to help them become better leaders.

This is my first year attending the LEAD Conference which will be held on Februray 21, 2009 at Meredith College. Words can't really explain how I feel because it's a once in a lifetime opportunity. I'm very excited about attending the conference as well as nervous because I never had to speak in front of more the 20 people before...and our group is presenting a program called "In Living Color: Appreciate and Synergize." It's all about diversity and how it applies to leadership roles.

Attending the LEAD Conference is going to be life changing. I know as a group we will do great during our presentation. We may even get lucky enough to host the Lead Conference here at NCCU in 2010.

Today, we as a people stood together, not to comfort each other in grief and fear because of some far reaching threat brought on by a foreign power, but in hope.

We came together to commemorate history. For today, a man took vows to place our needs before his own. He committed to change, progress, and the reclaiming of America’s history, a history that is sipping with purpose and great successes. This man reminded us that we are in a very real “crisis”.

America is facing an overwhelming set of problems, but we shall prevail, just as the generations before us prevailed. This new leader while being poised in the shadow of leader’s before him promised that now the hard decisions will be made for the betterment of our country. No more will we make decisions for the privileged few. No more will we accept ‘worn out dogma” or endure unfulfilled promises. As our nation is strengthened by change, so will we reach out that all mankind may share in our strength. Then we may revive the spirit of brotherhood between nations. We are made up of many countries, but we are one world.

As I stood watching this momentous event unfold, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride and joy. However, this is not just a joyous occasion. It’s a time for hard work. We embark upon a new era of responsibility. As students we are no less responsible. We are required to succeed and success is not easy. Nothing worthy is easy.

We must exhaust every resource to “shapen an uncertain destiny”, not just for ourselves, but for all future generations. We must settle for nothing less than perfection. Perfection isn’t a distant dream. It’s a real and attainable goal. We too must commit to change. One man can’t achieve the dream to improved a nation alone. He needs all of our aid. We have no right to stop. We have no right to fail. We have no right to be quiet. For too long have we been this way. Now is the time to act, yet not in violence, but with potency of mind and determination of will. With every course we pass, every degree we claim and every career we commence we become one step closer to fulfilling the dream.

We must in no way forget that through the inauguration of one man, we proved that we are powerful and that we shall be counted.

Along with President Barack Obama we can now assert our place in history as one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Why did you choose NCCU? Long answer....I'll cover it below!

Why did I choose NCCU? For one, the majority of my family lives in North Carolina, and I anticipated in coming back down here after being in New York since halfway through my 6th grade year. I enjoy not only just being in North Carolina but also having a second home that is no more than 15 to 20 minutes away (depending on how fast you drive) - my Grandma's house. This is where I am now starting to declare my residency.

What I Wish I Knew Before Starting College: I really wish I knew what a set back it would be for me if I were to do what those "party people" do every day for even just 2 weeks. Coming into college I really had no intentions of going to parties, clubs, and hanging out all day, knowing what happens to the average college student if he or she were to do that non-stop. Yet like most freshman I was a step behind in my work due to my late night hangouts.

By the time I realized my downfall I was really too late to make up for the time I have missed. Thus I have had many struggles getting through the first semester. My GPA was nowhere close to what I had originally anticipated, but I guess I must accept it and learn from what I have done wrong. My new motive is to do all of my work as soon as I get it (ASAIGI).

Why did you choose NCCU? This reason I choose NCCU was because I have always wanted to be an Eagle, the marching band is great, and the school was close to home and quite affordable.

What I wish I knew before starting college? I wish I would have know how to be more social. I spent much of my time in my room.

My Advice to Incoming freshmen:
Hello NEW EAGLES! My name is Donyarsha Goode and I’m a freshmen here at NCCU. My advice to you is to stay focused. All the things you hear about college life aren't true....

Yeah you have fun, but you also learn to become more independent. No one is going to constantly tell you do this and do that. You must take on some responsibility and remind yourself.

Oh, and be sure to buy an alarm clock because you're definitely going to need it!

Reflections on the Upcoming Inauguration of President Obama....

"Why Not?" - Melony Ochieng,
Freshman Pharmaceutical Science and Mathematics major

The questions "why?" and "why not?" have been running through my head ever since I noticed Obama.

Why would a black man even think about running for the elections this year?
"Why not!" I would argue with myself. When is a time ever better than now?
This argument has been with me through this entire process until "why not" won. "Why not?" is my new catch phrase because it opens doors for me to do anything. Why not be a double major in pharmaceutical science and math? These two are great combinations and the average degree does not cut in in the field that I am going into. Why not become a leader for myself and for my fellow students? It's never too early to teach others.

Why not become a follower? Since when did I proclaim myself as "all knowing." The question of "why?" to me now is just a hindrance to my personal development and to humanity. "Why not," I think is now what we all need to ask ourselves if we want to see marginal change in our lifetime.

So I am grateful for Barack Obama for what he has done and what he has inspire in us to do. I don't care if he does not change my life at a personal level anymore because he has given me enough to finish the job myself.

This moment in history is the greatest moment in my life. Many people don't realize what is really happening. Our ancestors, whether you are black, white, female, Indian, male, or so on, fought, suffered, and sacrificed for me, the ones behind me, and before me. I am overwhelmed with pride, Integrity, and so many other emotions that I still have not taken it all in.

And to know that he took the time to come to North Carolina Central University and I was in the band playing for him! I am so grateful to be able to even experience this opportunity first hand and feel the air and aura of being in Washington D.C. while the most historical event happens. I cried the moment I heard Barack Obama was president-elect. I knew my hard work was not in vain. I prayed for this and I'm honored to have Barack Obama as my president!

Spring 2009 Classes Have Begun.....

The first week of class was awesome. I was successful in finding all my classes and meeting my new professor's. It was very exhilarating for me to be back at school with my peers after the long break. I am definitely looking forward to a prosperous and fun filled semester!

Reason for attending NCCU: I attended NCCU because it was one of the schools that had my major, it was close to home, and it was a lot cheaper than other schools

One thing I wish I knew as a freshman: I wish I knew about the many activities that you could get involved in.

Advice to Incoming Freshmen:

HEY, FUTURE EAGLES! My name is Jessica Williams and I am a sophomore at NCCU majoring in Athletic Training. As of right now I am only part of the Physical Education and Recreational Majors Association (PERMA) but I am planning to join many other organizations

My advice to freshman is don’t get sidetracked by other things. It is so easy to forget the real reason you came to college. I had to learn from experience. My first semester here I thought college was just a place to get away from home and have fun. College is indeed fun but I lost track of what college was for and that showed up in my grades. Right now my main focus is to get my GPA up since I started off on the wrong foot.

My second piece of advice would be to attend the Orientation. The orientation was very helpful and you also meet new people and get a chance to feel for campus life. They showed me what buildings all my classes would be in and they give you a tour of the University. I hope you enjoy your college experience, and remember to GET INVOLVED!!

Why did I choose to attend NCCU? I chose to come to NCCU because of their well-known Criminal Justice department.

One thing I wish I knew before beginning college? I wish I knew about most, if not all, of the different organizations that are here on campus.

"Exam Week!! The fact of knowing that the semester is almost over, and that you have finally completed your first year of college can make it a little hard for you come exam week. Like everything, you get to the last little bit, and you can start to see that the end is near and lose concentration. But try not to let that happen, because if you do the road is going to seem even longer.

This semester was my first in college, and like they say it's the hardest too, because you're trying to deal with the transition from being secured at home to having freedom without supervision. For me, I had homework to do, but I chose to put it off till the last minute which wasn't such a great choice because everything started to pile up on me at the end. The best advice is: Don't lose focus on your purpose for being here. Stay in the books, stay on your grades, and be prepared for your exams, so you can finish out your first year on top!"

End of the Semester....Exam Time! Hear about it from NCCU Freshman, Olivia Scott

The time has come for the freshmen class of 2012 to experience their first college finals. This week will be filled with anxiety and stress. The transition from high school to college exam week is extremely different.

In college I have already experienced procrastination and staying up all night. After my first day of exams, I am tired from waiting until the last minute to study and being up until 6 am.

Take the tips that are given to you to prepare yourself to the highest extent for your exams. Even though I waited to the last minute I made an A on the final though!!!

One thing that all freshman should know:
Finish as soon as possible because the longer you wait the harder it is to finish.

Advice to NCCU Freshmen from James:

"I’m an older student returning to school after a long hiatus. I was a student back in the early 80’s and being away from home was such a thrill that I though being in college was all fun and games. I thought that school was just one big party.

Well, I felt that way until I got my first round of grades. At that point I decided to buckle down and study, stop hanging out. Too bad, no one told the crew that I was hanging out with that they should do the same. When I was trying to study, people would always come by my room and suddenly I would have something better to do. By the way there is always time to study, right??? That study time that I gave up to party, watch a movie or just listen to music was gone for ever and it was replaced with cramming for test or exams.

Now, I’m in the working world trying to find the time to fit school in my schedule. I did get enough credits during my very brief stint in college to return to school classified somewhere between a sophomore and a junior, but if I had known just a few basic rules during my first go around I would be working on my masters or even my doctorate.

I am not saying that my life was or is a complete failure, but I have made it as about as far as I can without the proper credentials. So, now I could possibly be one of the oldest sophomores at NCCU. Now, instead of distractions such as, hanging out with friends or wasting my money, I have a full time job and a family that I have to take seriously as well as school. If you think you got it hard now, just think of all of the non-traditional students that attend this great university, that have exams, papers due, and office deadlines due the same week or that school play and that lecture that you must attend, on the same night.

What you have to balance in your life is miniscule compared to what you could face in the future if you take your eye off the ball."

Reason she attended NCCU: I chose to attend NCCU because it was close to home and I love the marching band. It also provided me with a lot of opportunities with research and programs within my major.

One thing she wishes she knew as a freshman: One thing I wish I knew before coming to NCCU was where I could get stuff done at. For example, the Eagle Card Office being in the Biology building instead of somewhere like the Student Union or the Hoey building. I would have just liked to know where I could go and get things done.

A Bit of Advice from Audrey to NCCU Freshmen:

"Hello All!
I'm Audrey Barbee and I am a sophomore Biology Major. I'm involved in a lot of things on campus, including being an Alto Saxophonist in the Marching and Symphonic band, and a member of Student Government Association, Pre professional Health Society, Health Careers Club, Phi Eta Sigma, and Golden Key National Honor Society.

Some pieces of advice about school is that it's SO easy to get focused on things other than your school work. Just keep your eyes on the prize. Get involved on campus because that's what schools look for if you want another degree, but get a feel for college first. Keep track of all things; meetings, homework assignments, projects, study time, they are very important! You ALWAYS must remember what you are in college for.

The residence halls can be really fun because you make a lot of friends and you get to share the hallway, a common shower, bathroom, and a room! It may not seem so fun when you are in the moment, but when you look back at it, those are the memories you remember and love so much. Enjoy your college experience and do your best!"

NCCU Freshmen and Sophomores Ready to LEAD!

Nine NCCU freshmen and sophomore students were selected to attend the LEAD Conference in February 2009 at Meredith College.

LEAD stands for Learn, Explore, Accomplish, and Discover. This is an annual conference hosted at a college or university in North Carolina and is sponsored by the North Carolina College Personnel Association (NCCPA).

In the coming months, as the students prepare for the conference, you will find blog posts about their experience preparing for the conference as well as their individual experiences with life as NCCU students.

My name is Olivia Scott, and I helped out with the Open House on November 22--it was a great experience. The prospective students were eager to learn new information that was provided from each department. I was really happy to meet the out of state participants.

As a freshmen I was able to present my own experiences so far at North Carolina Central as well and give information that the Office of Orientation and First Year Experience had to offer. I'm wishing everyone that attended open house the best of luck and I anticipate that you will be attending North Carolina Central University!
